Perspective

I got out of the shower the other day and wrapped a towel around my wet hair. I then noticed a can of deodorant on the floor and bent down to pick it up but realised that I had no idea how far to reach out for it because one eye was covered in the towel.  My ability to judge depth and distance disappeared as I fumbled to pick up the can.  How odd.  I uncovered the hidden eye and immediately was able to see properly again.

As I headed to my bedroom I heard the word ' perspective' and reckoned that God wanted to say something about the need for two eyes in order to see properly.  With one eye we can see everything that is there, we can see colours and shapes and plenty of people manage to live perfectly ' normally' when they only have sight in one eye.  But with two eyes we see better.  We can make better judgements. We can calculate distance and see things with depth and perspective. We can judge how close or how far away things are.  And having two eyes also helps us to balance, especially when we are going over rough terrain. If you just cover one eye right now as you are reading this and reach out to touch something close by you will realise that without both eyes you just can't quite be confident that you will hit your mark.

God tells us that we are all part of His body and we all need each other in order for His body to be able to function properly and fully on the earth.  15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? ( 1 Cor 12)

If you have been praying for discernment, if you feel that God is far away, if you realise that you have lost some of your perspective then maybe what you need is someone else.  Another eye.  Maybe we work best when we work together.  I suspect this is particularly true for those of us who are married, but its probably true for all of us.  Two heads are better than one as they say.  If you are struggling to keep your balance or keep losing your feet on the rocky road of life then maybe its not a problem with your walk but with your sight.   Just a thought I'm leaving with you at the start of this Lent journey xx
