entertaining angels
Have you ever met an angel?
I dont think I have , but of course the Bible makes it clear that we might meet them often and just not know we have. I do know that I have been aware of angels a few times in my life. There is an angel who stands on the end of the Forth Road Bridge at the Fife end. He is enormous. He stands one foot on either side of the bridge and the traffic goes under his legs ๐ In my mind I see him dressed like a Roman soldier with a leather skirt and a helmet and a sword. Whenever I used to drive to Fife I would say hello to him as I drove ' underneath ' him. When a friend of mine got baptised many years ago I was sure that as she came up out of the water she was accompanied by an angel. This one was female and about the same size as my friend - almost like her shadow or her double. In my mind I couldnt see any details about what this angel looked like - it was just a strong impression in my mind that it was there.
The lovely thing about the verse about entertaining angels unawares is that we can't lose. If we are open to people, hospitable, caring, interested in them, then we make new friends, discover new things and are blessed. When we welcome the stranger we welcome Jesus in them. But there is always the possibility that we are also welcoming one of God's special envoys.
You would think that if angels were going to show up in our everyday lives they would be quite keen to let us know that they were there and what they were up to. But apparently not. And the reason that they keep themselves hidden is that they know just how easily we are distracted and how tempted we would be to worship them if they showed up in full celestial glory๐ So they stand on top of hospitals doing battle for the sick and carrying out their assignments unseen by us, but they also walk among us looking like ordinary everyday people, helping us in ways we wont understand until we get to heaven and God shows us.
I'd like to meet angels. So I guess I will just have to be more open to meeting people ๐ I'd love to hear if any of you have met one.
